The honest answer is “it depends” — but that’s not useful when you’re trying to plan around a paint job. So instead of a vague range, here’s what our crews have actually clocked on real San Diego projects, from a single room to a full interior-and-exterior repaint.

Notice the one-bedroom apartment: a full day is walls alone. The remaining half-day covers baseboards and doors — trim work always takes longer per square foot than open wall space, which is why a small apartment isn’t necessarily a quick half-day job.
Why Some Projects Take Longer: A Real Example
The numbers above assume a straightforward paint job — walls in reasonable condition, no structural repairs needed. Add repair work and the timeline changes.
We recently painted a rental house in Mission Beach, about 1,200 sq ft. On paper, that’s a smaller home than our 1,500–1,700 sq ft Pacific Beach example above — but it took longer, not less time. Why? The ceilings had exposed beams, which take significantly more time to cut in and paint than a flat ceiling, and there was drywall repair needed before we could paint at all. Repair work always happens before paint, not alongside it.
In our experience, the two real causes of delay are weather (San Diego’s rainy stretches in winter can push an exterior job back a week or two) and humidity, which slows dry time between coats. Material availability is not something we deal with — unlike some other places, we don’t wait on paint or supplies here.
Living in Your Home During the Paint Job
Most interior projects happen while the family is still living in the house. We don’t ask people to move out. Instead, we start with whatever matters most to you — usually the master bedroom — and work through the house in sections. Before we start, we ask the client directly what’s the priority: which rooms need to come first, which ones can wait. Each day, we paint what we can, clean up completely, and leave the space usable again.
What About the Kitchen?
Kitchens are the exception. A 4-day kitchen job means the kitchen is close to unusable for most of that time. We can trim back the plastic sheeting in certain spots during the evening so you can grab what you need, but cooking a full meal in there isn’t realistic mid-project. Our honest advice: stock up on ready-made food — a Whole Foods run covers most families — for the days the kitchen is out of commission. We do a full cleanup at the end of every single work day, so at least the mess doesn’t carry over to the next morning.
