The Person Behind the Work

Meet Victor Ross

Victor Ross has been transforming Southern California homes for over 8 years. With a degree in architecture, he brings something most painters simply don't have — an eye for structure, proportion, and how color fundamentally changes how a space feels. Before founding his own company, he spent years absorbing every detail of what separates a lasting finish from a rushed one.

When he founded Ross Painting Group, the name was intentional. "Ross" — his last name — stands for the personal accountability he brings to every project. Not a faceless brand, but a promise signed by him.

"Most painters rush the prep to get to the next job. I'd rather take an extra day and have a finish that lasts fifteen years."

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked

Yes. Ross Painting Group holds California Contractor License #1151078 and is fully insured and bonded (Bond #PB10163408191). You can verify the license at any time at cslb.ca.gov — search by license number or company name. We carry full general liability insurance and workers' compensation on every job, protecting your property and our crew throughout the project. Why does this matter? In California, any painting contractor on jobs over $500 must be licensed by the CSLB. Hiring an unlicensed painter leaves you with no legal protection — and if a worker is injured on your property without workers' comp coverage, you as the homeowner can be held liable. We provide certificates of insurance on request, and routinely do so for HOAs and property managers.
Before any interior paint job, we carefully inspect walls and ceilings. Drywall repair is needed when you see cracks, nail pops, water stains, or holes — painting over these doesn't hide them, it highlights them. San Diego homes, especially older craftsman and stucco properties, often develop minor settling cracks over time. Nail pops are common in homes built in the 1970s–90s when drywall screws were underdriven. Water stains require not just patching but stain-blocking primer — or the discoloration bleeds through even two coats of finish paint. We include drywall patching, skim-coating, and spot-priming as a standard part of our interior prep process. It's the difference between a flat, professional finish and one that looks like paint was applied over existing damage. We assess all walls during the on-site estimate and include any needed repair work in the quote.
San Diego's coastal climate — salt air, UV exposure, and marine layer humidity — takes a real toll on exterior wood. Fascia boards, window frames, siding, and eaves can develop rot, splitting, or delamination over time. Painting over damaged wood doesn't fix it; it traps moisture inside and accelerates deterioration. Within a year or two, the paint film separates from the compromised substrate and you're back to peeling. We assess all exterior wood surfaces during the estimate walkthrough. Sections that are soft, spongy, or structurally compromised are repaired or replaced using epoxy wood filler or new material before any primer goes on. Skipping this step is the most common reason exterior paint jobs fail prematurely in La Jolla, Del Mar, and other San Diego coastal neighborhoods. Our written quote includes all wood repair identified during the walkthrough.
Our prep is more thorough than most crews in San Diego. For interiors: move and cover all furniture, protect floors with rosin paper, mask trim and baseboards, remove outlet and switch plates, fill holes with spackle, sand smooth, and spot-prime where needed. We never skip the primer step on repaired areas — new spackle absorbs paint differently and creates visible flashing if not primed. For exteriors: pressure wash at 2,500–3,000 PSI to remove salt, mold, and chalk; scrape all loose paint back to a stable edge; power-sand rough transitions; caulk all gaps and cracks with 50-year elastomeric caulk; and prime all bare wood. We spend 40–50% of project time on prep. It's unglamorous work, but it's the only thing that determines whether a paint job lasts 3 years or 12. Every homeowner who has re-hired us will tell you this is the difference.
San Diego's strong Mediterranean light is unique — it bleaches some warm tones and makes certain colors look flat by midday. Having painted over 1,100 homes here, we've developed a clear sense of what works in our specific climate and light conditions. Warm whites like Sherwin-Williams Alabaster or Benjamin Moore White Dove read beautifully in La Jolla's coastal light. Soft greiges — Accessible Beige, Agreeable Gray — photograph well and hold their value on resale. Muted sage and eucalyptus tones have become popular in Carmel Valley and Del Mar and work especially well with the regional landscape. The key rule: always test a large swatch (at least 12"×12") in your actual space at different times of day before committing. We're happy to advise on color pairings during the estimate. For deeper exploration, Sherwin-Williams and Dunn-Edwards showrooms offer free consultations with large chip samples you can take home.
The finish level affects both appearance and durability — and the wrong choice is a common mistake. Flat/matte: zero sheen, touches up seamlessly without flashing, but marks easily and is hard to wipe clean. Best for ceilings and low-traffic bedrooms. Eggshell: subtle sheen, wipeable with a damp cloth, forgiving to apply. The most popular choice for San Diego living rooms, dining rooms, and hallways. Satin: slightly more reflective, better scrub resistance — good for kids' rooms and high-traffic areas. Semi-gloss: hard, moisture-resistant film. Standard for trim, doors, window casings, and bathrooms throughout San Diego. High-gloss: maximum durability and sheen, but magnifies every surface imperfection — rarely used on walls. The rule: more traffic and moisture, higher sheen. We recommend the right finish for each surface during the on-site walkthrough and include it in the written quote.
Step 1 — pressure wash at 2,500–3,000 PSI: salt air, mold, algae, oxidation, and bird droppings all prevent paint from bonding, so removing them comes first. Step 2 — scrape and sand: all chipping and peeling paint is scraped back to a stable edge and the ridges power-sanded smooth. Step 3 — repair: wood rot replaced, stucco cracks patched, large gaps filled with Bondo or elastomeric caulk. Step 4 — prime: every bare wood area, repaired spot, and stucco patch gets the appropriate primer before any finish coat goes on. Step 5 — paint: one to two coats of 100% acrylic exterior paint from Sherwin-Williams or Dunn-Edwards, applied by brush, roller, or airless sprayer depending on the surface. Each coat must fully dry before the next. In San Diego's mild climate, this full process done correctly produces a finish that lasts 10–15 years even in coastal neighborhoods with heavy salt exposure.
High-moisture rooms require a different product strategy from the rest of the house. We always specify semi-gloss paint for bathrooms and kitchens — it's harder, more washable, and its vapor-resistance significantly slows mold growth behind the paint film. In San Diego coastal bathrooms where humidity is a constant factor, product selection here really matters. Our prep is thorough: protect all fixtures, tile, and cabinetry; remove outlet and switch covers; patch any wall damage or mold-stained areas; apply mold-resistant primer on any bare or previously affected spots; and apply two finish coats. For areas with active mold, we clean the surface with a biocide solution, allow full drying time, then prime with a mold-blocking primer before any finish coat. We also advise on appropriate ventilation requirements and minimum dry time before normal use resumes. Bathrooms and kitchens are typically the last rooms we paint in any interior project.
Peeling paint is almost always a prep failure — the surface wasn't clean before painting, old paint wasn't scraped back to a stable edge, or priming was skipped entirely. Cheap paint and skipped primer are the two leading causes of premature failure on San Diego exteriors. Fixing it properly means going back to basics: scrape all loose material until you reach paint that is firmly bonded to the substrate, feather the edges smooth with an orbital sander, spot-prime every exposed bare area, then repaint. The temptation is to paint directly over peeling areas — don't. New paint applied over unstable old paint fails again, usually faster than the first time, because it bonds to the loose layer rather than the substrate. We've re-done many San Diego homes that were painted this way by other contractors. Done correctly, the fix lasts as long as a fresh paint job.
Dry time and cure time are different things — and both matter. Latex paint is dry to the touch within 1 hour and ready for a second coat in 3–4 hours under normal conditions. Oil-based paint takes 8 hours before recoating. Full cure — when the film reaches maximum hardness and washability — takes 2–4 weeks for latex, 7 days for oil. San Diego's warm, low-humidity climate is actually excellent for painting: exterior surfaces dry faster here than almost anywhere else in the country, which is why we can sometimes complete multi-coat exteriors in fewer days than quoted. For interior rooms, light use is fine within a few hours of the final coat. However, avoid scrubbing walls, cleaning with any chemicals, or pushing furniture flush against freshly painted surfaces for at least two weeks. Doing so before the paint fully cures will damage the film and leave marks that won't touch up cleanly.
Stucco is the dominant exterior finish on San Diego homes and needs specific knowledge to repair correctly. Cracks, chips, and hollow sections allow moisture into the wall system — in our coastal climate this leads to corrosion of the metal lath underneath and eventual damage to the wall framing. The rule of thumb: hairline cracks (under 1/8") can be sealed with elastomeric caulk before painting. Larger cracks, hollow sections, or areas with visible substrate damage require proper patching: grind out to stable material, apply bonding agent, re-stucco in matching texture (dash, lace, skip, or smooth), allow adequate cure time, seal with primer, then paint. Texture matching is a skill — done wrong, patches are visible under raking light even through paint. We carry multiple stucco textures and match them on-site. Stucco assessment and repair is part of every exterior project we take on — it's not an optional add-on.
Pricing varies based on home size, number of stories, surface condition, stucco vs. wood siding, and paint selection. A well-maintained single-story San Diego home typically runs $3,500–$5,500. Two-story homes and those requiring stucco repair, wood replacement, or significant prep work run $6,000–$9,500 and up. These ranges include full preparation, two coats of premium Sherwin-Williams or Dunn-Edwards paint on all surfaces, caulking, and cleanup — materials are included. What drives cost up most isn't square footage, it's surface condition. A 1,500 sq ft home with heavy peeling and stucco cracks can cost more than a well-maintained 2,000 sq ft home in La Jolla. We never give numbers over the phone without seeing the property — a visit takes 20–30 minutes and produces a detailed written quote with every line item explained. No ballpark estimates, no surprise add-ons at invoice time. Call (619) 917-9088 to schedule.
Cost depends on the number of cabinet doors and drawer fronts, whether the boxes also need painting, and the condition of the existing finish. In San Diego, a full kitchen repaint — doors, drawers, and interior/exterior of boxes — typically ranges from $2,800 to $6,500 depending on scope. Compare that to full cabinet replacement at $15,000–$50,000. Our process: all doors and drawer fronts are removed, sanded, primed with oil or shellac primer, and finish-coated with Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane via HVLP spray off-site. Boxes are painted in place. Hardware is removed and reinstalled. The result is a factory-quality, hard-curing enamel finish that's chip-resistant and washable — critical for a kitchen surface. A full kitchen typically takes 4–6 days. In San Diego's competitive real estate market, cabinet painting is one of the highest-ROI updates you can make before listing. Contact us for a free on-site estimate.
Residential painting covers all painting work on private homes — exterior repaints, interior rooms, kitchen cabinets, trim, fences, garage doors, and more. The three variables that determine quality and longevity are product selection (the right coating for the surface and San Diego's coastal climate), surface preparation (what actually determines how long the finish lasts), and application technique. Most cost competition in residential painting happens at the expense of prep and materials — two things that are invisible at the estimate stage but very visible three years later. Ross Painting Group has completed over 1,100 residential projects across San Diego since 2018, from luxury coastal homes in La Jolla and Del Mar to family homes in Poway and Chula Vista. We use only Sherwin-Williams and Dunn-Edwards products, and every project comes with a written warranty. CA Licensed #1151078.
Commercial painting covers business properties — office buildings, retail spaces, restaurants, warehouses, auto dealerships, and HOA complexes. The differences from residential work are significant: larger surface areas require commercial-grade application equipment; scheduling often means nights, weekends, or phased sections to keep your business running without interruption; product selection prioritizes traffic and abrasion resistance over aesthetics; and interior spaces may require low-VOC or zero-VOC coatings for occupant safety and code compliance. Ross Painting Group handles both residential and commercial projects throughout San Diego County and Southern California. Our commercial work includes auto dealerships, multi-unit residential complexes, retail centers, and HOA-managed communities. Every commercial project receives a detailed scope-of-work document and fixed timeline before any work begins. We are CA Licensed #1151078 and fully insured for commercial work. Contact us to discuss your commercial project.
Three things to verify before signing anything. License: every contractor on jobs over $500 must be licensed by the California CSLB. Verify the number at cslb.ca.gov — unlicensed work leaves you with no legal protection and potential liability for on-site injuries. Insurance: the contractor must carry active general liability insurance and workers' compensation. Ask for a certificate of insurance naming your property — not just a verbal claim. Reviews: a consistent 5-star Google rating with detailed, project-specific reviews tells you more than any website. Look for reviews that mention the owner or crew by name, describe specific work done, and come from verifiable San Diego addresses. Also ask to see photos of recent projects in your neighborhood — exterior paint looks very different on a La Jolla coastal home versus an Escondido inland home. Ross Painting Group: CA License #1151078, fully insured, 5.0 Google rating.
Ross Painting Group has been serving San Diego homeowners and businesses since 2018 — over 1,100 completed projects, a 5.0 Google rating across 17+ verified reviews, and a permanent crew of specialists including foreman Chilo and interior specialist Svitlana, who are named in our reviews. We're CA Licensed (#1151078), fully insured (general liability + workers' comp), and bonded (#PB10163408191). Our work spans the full length of San Diego County — La Jolla, Del Mar, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Valley, Pacific Beach, Scripps Ranch, Poway, El Cajon, Chula Vista, and beyond. Every project includes a written warranty, a fully itemized quote, and daily photo updates during work. We also serve Orange County and Los Angeles. Call (619) 917-9088 or fill out the estimate form — we respond within 10 minutes during business hours, Monday through Saturday.
The front door is one of the highest-impact details on any home's curb appeal — we treat it accordingly. All hardware is removed entirely, never taped around. The surface is cleaned, lightly sanded for maximum adhesion, and any cracks or chips are filled. We apply a semi-gloss or satin finish in two coats by brush and fine-nap roller for a result close to a factory spray finish. If the door is wood and showing grain or checking, we may recommend a light skim coat of flexible filler first. Color choice matters enormously on a front door — the right color against your body and trim transforms the entire façade. One of our best-reviewed projects in San Diego involved a homeowner who resisted our suggestion for a deep navy door — after we painted it, she told us it became the most commented feature of the home. We're happy to advise on color pairing during the estimate, no charge.
Trim is where most crews fall short — cutting a clean line between wall color and trim requires skill, the right tools, and patience that hourly-rate crews rarely have. We use professional painter's tape and plastic masking on adjacent surfaces, a sash brush for tight cuts and corners, and a ⅜" nap roller on flat trim runs. Trim always gets semi-gloss — it's harder, more washable, and its slight sheen reads as a clean crisp detail against matte or eggshell walls. We never use flat paint on trim. In San Diego homes with detailed millwork, crown molding, wainscoting, or paneled doors, our crew takes additional time at these details — those are often the first things clients and guests notice in the final result. The line quality on trim is how you tell a professional paint job from an amateur one at a glance.
Two keys: product and technique — and most crews get both wrong. For product: we always use dead flat or ceiling-specific paint. Any sheen on a ceiling makes roller lines visible in raking light, especially in San Diego homes with large windows and strong directional sun. Eggshell on a ceiling is one of the most common and most visible mistakes we see on re-paints. For technique: cut in the perimeter first with a brush, then roll the field while the cut-in is still wet to blend the textures. Roll the first coat north-to-south, let it dry fully, then roll the second coat east-to-west. This cross-rolling technique eliminates lap marks. For vaulted ceilings or open-plan homes where the ceiling is architecturally prominent, we sometimes spray with the room fully protected — airless spray produces a shadow-free, glass-smooth finish that rolling simply cannot match on large open planes.
For a standard single-story San Diego exterior (1,400–1,800 sq ft of paintable surface), plan for 8–12 gallons for two body coats when spraying on stucco, or 6–9 gallons when rolling smooth surfaces. Stucco is highly porous and absorbs significantly more product than wood siding. Trim, fascia, and eaves typically add another 3–5 gallons. For interiors: roughly 2 gallons per standard bedroom (two coats), 3–4 gallons for living rooms and open-plan spaces, 1 gallon for bathrooms. Going from a dark color to a light one (or vice versa) may require an additional primer coat, adding 20–30% to material usage. We calculate exact quantities for every project based on actual square footage and substrate, and include all materials in the written quote — you're never asked to supply your own paint or make a mid-project supply run. All material costs are included in our price.
We always recommend removing wallpaper before painting whenever structurally possible — it produces a better long-term result and eliminates the risk of edge-lifting or seam telegraphing through the finish coat over time. When removal isn't feasible (wallpaper applied directly to unprimed drywall, for instance, where removal would destroy the paper face), the correct approach is a shellac-based primer — Zinsser BIN or similar. Shellac seals the wallpaper, adhesive residue, and any potential bleed-through from dyes in the paper. A standard latex primer will not hold reliably over wallpaper and often causes bubbling or lifting. After shellac dries (15–30 minutes), the surface accepts two coats of finish paint normally. We assess each situation on-site — some wallpaper removes cleanly in an hour; some requires steaming and takes days. Either way, we advise you on the best approach and include the cost in the written quote.
Cost depends on the number of layers, the age and type of adhesive, and the condition of the wall substrate behind it. Modern vinyl paper over properly primed drywall often peels off cleanly in large sections — relatively fast. Old wallpaper with dried animal-based paste on plaster, or paper applied directly to unprimed drywall, can take 3–5 times longer and may require steaming equipment. Multiple layers multiply the time further. We evaluate wallpaper removal as part of the on-site estimate, assessing the paper type, substrate condition, and room size before quoting. Wall condition after removal directly affects what primer and prep work is needed — so we look at it all together rather than pricing removal and painting separately. Typical single-room removal in San Diego runs $300–$700. Call (619) 917-9088 for a free walkthrough and we'll give you an exact number.
A professional interior paint job starts with a color and finish consultation, then complete surface prep: moving and covering all furniture with plastic sheeting, protecting floors with rosin paper, masking all trim and baseboards, removing outlet and switch plates, patching all holes and cracks with spackle or joint compound, sanding smooth, and priming bare or repaired spots. Application is a minimum of two coats with proper dry time between — we never apply a second coat over wet or even tacky paint. Final step: remove all masking, reinstall plates, walk through every room with the client and address any touch-ups before final payment. Our interior specialist Svitlana handles the majority of our San Diego interior projects. Her precision on trim lines, ceiling cuts, and corner work is what clients consistently mention in their reviews — and it's why most of our interior clients refer us to their neighbors.
Cabinet painting is the professional refinishing of kitchen or bathroom cabinet boxes and doors — sanding, priming, and applying a factory-smooth, durable topcoat. In San Diego's competitive real estate market, kitchens are one of the top factors buyers evaluate, and a dated dark-wood or honey-oak kitchen painted white or greige can look like an entirely different space at a fraction of replacement cost. Our process: all doors and drawer fronts are removed and finished off-site with HVLP spray using Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane — a catalyzed enamel that cures to a chip-resistant, washable finish. Boxes are painted in place with a brush and roller. Hardware is removed, cleaned, and reinstalled. A full kitchen takes 4–6 days. Cost ranges from $2,800 to $6,500 in San Diego depending on number of doors. The result adds measurable resale value and is one of our most frequently requested services.
Yes — every project comes with a written warranty provided at completion alongside your invoice and project documentation. Exterior painting is warranted for 3 years against peeling, cracking, and premature fading attributable to our application or product selection. Interior work is warranted for 2 years. If anything isn't right within the warranty period, we come back and make it right at no charge, no questions asked — no negotiation, no excuses. We can back this warranty because we don't cut corners on prep, we use only premium Sherwin-Williams and Dunn-Edwards products, and we've been operating in San Diego since 2018 with a reputation that depends on standing behind our work. Our crew foreman Chilo has been with us from the beginning — if a warranty issue arises, he handles it personally. We've completed over 1,100 projects; warranty callbacks are rare.
