Cabinet staining is the right choice when you want to enhance the natural beauty of real wood — not cover it. Where cabinet painting hides the grain under a solid color, cabinet staining opens the grain and deepens it, giving oak, maple, alder, and cherry cabinets a rich, warm finish that looks intentional and high-end.
Ross Painting Group has stained hundreds of cabinet sets throughout San Diego County. We work with both penetrating oil stains and gel stains, depending on the wood species and the target color. Our spray application produces an even, streak-free result that brush or rag application can’t match.
When to stain vs. paint your cabinets
Stain is the right choice when:
- Your cabinets are solid wood or real-wood veneer (not MDF or thermofoil)
- You want to show — not hide — the wood grain
- You’re refreshing existing stained cabinets (darkening, lightening, or changing tone)
- You’re going for a transitional, craftsman, or rustic kitchen aesthetic
Paint is the right choice when:
- You want a completely solid color (white, navy, sage, black)
- Your cabinets are MDF or have extensive filler repairs
- You want maximum durability in a high-use kitchen
Our cabinet staining process
- Removal and labeling — Every door and drawer front comes off and gets labeled for exact reinstallation. All staining work is performed on-site at your home.
- Sanding — All surfaces are sanded with the grain to remove the old finish and open the wood. Uneven sanding creates blotching — we take our time here.
- Stain application — We apply the chosen stain color and work it into the grain. Multiple coats achieve depth. Gel stains give more control on dense grain woods like maple.
- Topcoat — A clear protective topcoat (water-based polyurethane or lacquer) protects the stain and gives the finish its sheen level — matte, satin, or semi-gloss. This is what makes the finish washable and durable.
- Reinstallation — Doors reinstalled, hinges adjusted, hardware reinstalled.
Popular stain colors for San Diego kitchens
We see a lot of demand for lighter, Scandinavian-inspired finishes: whitewash, driftwood, and natural oak tones that look great against white countertops and stainless appliances. We also do deep espresso and walnut tones for more traditional aesthetics. We bring samples to every estimate.
