Limewash painting is one of the oldest and most beautiful wall finishes in the world — and it has seen a remarkable revival in San Diego’s design-conscious homes. Ross Painting Group applies authentic limewash and Roman Clay finishes to both interior walls and exterior masonry, creating the signature mottled, aged texture that defines this unique technique.
Limewash is made from slaked lime — a completely natural, breathable material that has been used for thousands of years on Mediterranean, Spanish Colonial, and Tuscan architecture. When applied to brick, stucco, plaster, or concrete, it penetrates the surface and bonds at the molecular level, becoming part of the wall rather than sitting on top of it. This means it won’t peel, blister, or trap moisture the way film-forming paints can.
The application technique is as important as the material. Limewash is brushed on in thin, overlapping strokes — then partially wiped back in some areas to create the characteristic variation in color depth and texture. No two limewash applications look exactly alike, which is precisely the point. Your walls get a finish with genuine character and authenticity.
We work with Portola Paints’ Lime Wash collection, Romabio Classico Limewash, and traditional slaked lime mixes. Ideal for Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean, and contemporary San Diego homes.
Our Process
Limewash bonds best to porous surfaces — brick, stucco, plaster, concrete. We assess and prep.
Surface cleaned. Non-porous coatings stripped. Limewash requires a breathable substrate.
Applied in thin overlapping strokes, wiped back in areas for signature mottled, aged appearance.
Interior applications can be sealed with matte topcoat for easier cleaning.
